The thesis reconstructs the theory, the pedagogy and the chorographic language of Hanya Holm (Worms, 1893 – New York, 1992), german dancer and choreographer, naturalized American. Hanya Holm is a central personality of the dance of the twentieth century. She has been little studied by specific literature. The reconstruction Hanya Holm’s theory, pedagogy and choreographic language is based on manuscripts of Hanya Holm Paper of the New York Public Library. The thesis’s work begins from Holm’s artistic biography: from her dance training at Mary Wigman school of Dresden to her artistic work to America. A central chapter is dedicated to Holm’s theory and to her inspiration sources (romantic thought, Mary Wigman, Rudolf Laban, Edward Gordn Craig). Various principles of Holm’s theory influence Alwin Nikolais's theory, which was one of her most famous student. It can be found a close link between theoretical principles and the pedagogical method of the dancer: a fundamental step of the Holm's theory and her practice is a building a body and an inner attitude for fulfillment of her choreographies. So, the thesis devotes one important place to the pedagogical method and to the choreographic practice. The last chapter is dedicated to the problem of the reconstruction and of the critical investigation of a specific choreography (City Nocturne, 1936). The reconstruction is based on a series of choreographical scores which are preserved in the Hanya Holm Paper archive.
