Abstract (inglese)

This thesis is devoted to a historical reconstruction of the cosmological debates which took place during the 1920's on the so-called de Sitter effect. Such a theoretical redshift-distance relation played a fundamental role in the early phases of modern cosmology, when the concept of the expanding universe still had to enter the scientific study of the universe as a whole. The de Sitter effect represents the linking thread between the predictions of theoretical relativistic models of Einstein and de Sitter and observational cosmology. The history of those debates permits therefore to understand how cosmology developed passing from a sphere of theoretical speculations to a truly empirical science.

Abstract (italiano)

In questa tesi viene proposta una ricostruzione storica dei dibattiti cosmologici centrati sull'effetto de Sitter che ebbero luogo negli anni Venti. In quegli anni l'universo era considerato statico, e il concetto di universo in espansione doveva ancora fare la sua comparsa nello studio scientifico del cosmo. L'effto de Sitter è una relazione teorica tra redshift e distanza, e svolse un ruolo fondamentale nelle prime fasi della cosmologia moderna. Attorno a tale effetto ruotarono infatti i primi confronti tra le previsioni dei modelli teorici relativistici di Einstein e de Sitter e le osservazioni su scala cosmologica, favorendo quindi il passaggio della cosmologia da pura discussione teorica a scienza empirica.
