Between the publication of Winckelmann's History of Ancient Art (1764) and the Greek independence (1830) the rediscovery of Greece and its antiquities by the occidental world makes a quantum leap. How did the exploration of Greece and the research of antiquities take place ? How was the country illustrated in the publications ? This work aims at answering these questions through the analysis of the work of the French painter Louis François Sébastien Fauvel (1753-1838) who spent more than fifty years in the Ottoman Empire. The archives of this versatile man contain numerous informations on his excavations and researches, as well as more than two thousand drawings among which picturesque views, maps, and architectural studies. The analysis of this mostly unpublished material allows to place Fauvel's work and ideas in relation to his contemporaries and predecessors. During this pivotal period between antiquarian studies and the advent of a scientific archaeology his contribution to this emerging field and to the rediscovery of Greek art in France is significant. The second part of this work focuses on the history of collections. It notably reveals Fauvel's social network and his contribution to the constitution of the most important public and private collections of antiquities in Europe. Finally the original context of some pieces has been revealed through their link with Fauvel.
