The present work exposes and discusses the history of the interpretation of the Opus postumum in the research on Kant’s philosophy, from the first essays on this project, which were issued in 1884. The first two chapters are dedicated to the interpretation of this writing in Neokantianism, from the studies of Albrecht Krause and Hans Vaihinger until those of Erich Adickes and the post-adickesians. Chapter III presents a survey on the publications about the Opus postumum starting from the works of Lehmann until our own day and exposes the debate about the methodological problems concerning the interpretation of Kant’s last project. In the next chapters the results of these inquiries are explained following the chronological and thematic order of the original text: the genetic and systematic relationship of the project of a “Transition from the First Principles of the Metaphysics of Nature to Physics” to the First Principles of 1886 and to the third Critique (chapters IV and V), the ether deduction (chapter VI), the doctrine of self-affection (chapter VII), the conception of the self-positing subject, of theology and of transcendental philosophy in the last drafts (chapter VIII).
