Infestations by the mealybug P. ficus are recently reported in vineyards in northeastern Italy. Pesticides used against other grape pests seem ineffective toward P. ficus probably because of the mealybug behaviour and the restricted spectrum of several active ingredients. The effects of a number of pesticides on P. ficus populations were investigated in a vineyard located in the Veneto region. Organophosphates proved to be more effective than other insecticides in controlling mealybugs. The control strategy of this pest requires an effective monitoring of the population dynamics, which is affected by various abiotic and biotic factors.
