Abstract

One of the most widely used substrates in nursery production is peat which is used as plain substrate or mixed with other media. Peat use is problematic, primarily because of the high price and the environmental implications connected with its extraction and disposal. For these reasons, the exploitation will be restricted in the future in both Europe and America. Thus, researchers are under pressure to find alternative substrates that can be used in an inexpensive and environmentally friendly way. Until today without succes in the aim to found same material with the necessary caratteristics to be porpose us a real sustitute for peat. One of the aim of this work it was find, or atleast individuate a material could be use us a sustitute for peat, from the large possibility of materials porpose on domuments and bibliography about previus experiments and considerate in the same time very important factors lika a costs, availability, etc , after that, the desicion it was for rice hulls. In this work it was do an special caracterization about rice hulls for all the diferents topics chemicals, fisicals and more, that allow a perfect identification for the material, triing to reconize all the diferents particulars, that can help to evaluate the behavior to take to manager us a growing media on the experimentation. The coltivation experiments done, usings substrats made by rice hulls always confronting with peat help to studi this material to be use as a growing media, and could mesure the results obtain in the same coltivation situation with peat, after take clear and precise finals conclusions.
