The booming of economy and the excessive use of fossil fuel make China face many severe challenges, i.e. energy security problems for sustaining rapidly growing GDP, serious environmental contaminations, and threats to social stability. Thus, the stakeholders/decision-makers in China have paid more and more attentions to develop alternative energy sources (i.e. solar energy, wind power, and nuclear power), energy carriers (i.e. biofuels and hydrogen), and to incorporate the concept of sustainability in energy-industrial system. Among these, hydrogen economy and biofuel industry in China have obtained increasing interests and attentions from the China’s administrators and policy-makers as the use of hydrogen and biofuel is regarded to have great potential to efficaciously mitigate the energy, environmental, social and geopolitical problems, and also to achieve sustainable development. But there are three questions that usually puzzle the stakeholders/decision-makers: (1) How to make correct decision on selecting the most sustainable pathway among many energy candidates? (2) How to improve and enhance the sustainability of the existed energy systems? (3) How to design and optimize the sustainability of energy systems in different conditions? Thus, there are three objectives in this dissertation: (1) sustainability assessment and analysis; (2) sustainability improvement and enhancement; (3) sustainability design and optimization. Hydrogen and biofuels are usually used as the objects to illustrate the developed models and methodologies that can be popularized to some other energy systems.
