Abstract (english)

The ascetic endeavor described by Isaac of Niniveh can be easily lectured as a gnoseological itinerary that reaches its maximum form in what he calls perception of the divine reality or spiritual vision. So to picture this process the bishop of Niniveh makes an interesting synthesis between Evagrius, Theodore of Mopsuestia and John the Solitary. The thesis aims to give a contextual reading of Isaac’s gnoseological doctrine in its double dimension – worldly and spiritual – and to identify the rapport established between the two, in reference to the fonts he uses, paying attention to the phraseology and structures he employs, with respect to the contemporary East Christian Syriac thinking. The analysis becomes more interesting if one places it within the East Syriac Christology of the 7-8th century and the various debates between an academic theology, on one side, and an experiential theology, on the other side, both of the parties occasionally represented by school professors, higher clergy and the monastics. The important question to deal with refers to the place Isaac’s spiritual epistemology and, consequently, his Christology, occupies within the theological landscape of the contemporary East Syriac Church, in particular, and the Syriac Church, in general.

Lo sforzo ascetico descritto da Isacco di Ninive può essere facilmente letto come un percorso gnoseologico che raggiunge la sua massima forma in ciò che egli chiama la percezione delle realtà divine o della visione spirituale.Per construire questo processo il vescovo di Ninive fa una interessante sintesi tra Evagrio, Teodoro di Mopsuestia e Giovanni il Solitario. La tesi si propone di fare una lettura contestuale della dottrina gnoseologica di Isacco nella sua doppia dimensione - mondana e spirituale - e di identificare il rapporto tra le due, in riferimento ai fonti che usa, prestando attenzione alla fraseologia e alla struttura che impiega, con rispetto al pensiero contemporaneo della sua communità cristiana siro-orientale. L’analisi diventa più interessante se si colloca all'interno del cristologia siro-orientale del 7-8 secolo e i vari dibattiti tra una teologia accademica, da un lato, e una teologia esperienziale, dall’altro lato, entrambe le parti rappresentate occasionalmente da i teologi, dall’alto clero e dei monaci. La questione importante da affrontare si riferisce al luogo che l’epistemologia spirituale di Isacco, e di conseguenza, la sua cristologia, occupa nel paesaggio teologica della Chiesa siro-orientale contemporanea, in particolare, e la Chiesa sira, in generale.
