This research illustrates the first steps of a new tutoring model experimentation in Padova University (Italy), aiming to tackle students’ academic failure and the drop-out phenomenon. The analysis of the theoretical national and international frameworks led to identify the Spanish model tutoría formativa de carrera (Álvarez, 2002) as an interesting strategy to improve student performance in Italian universities. In order to pursue the investigation’s aims, a mixed multiple method was used, with triangulation and integration of quali-quant approaches The Degree Courses (DCs) where the experimentation of Formative Tutoring began were selected according to an analysis of administrative data of 104 first-cycle DCs of Padova University. Starting from the data on the careers of students enrolled in the four-year period 2008/09-2011/12, three macro-categories of indicators were obtained for each course: students’ general characteristics, aspects of the drop-out phenomenon and performance levels. Three DCs with high drop-out and low performance rates were chosen as case studies, each representing one of three areas of the University’s formative offer (Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities). 120 students, 12 tutor teachers and 25 tutor students took part in the experimentation. The activities of Formative Tutoring were proposed to first-year students, with the aim to ease the transition between secondary school and university and to foster the integration in the university context. The experimental activities have been coordinated through an e-learning platform, which includes the tools to evaluate the activities and their effectiveness.
